idealogo2The INTERNATIONAL DIVING EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION (IDEA) was originally established in 1952 as part of the FSDA-Florida Skin Divers Association (later changed to Florida Scuba Divers Association).  FSDA was and still is a large group of politically active dive clubs.  FSDA has been the voice of the diver since 1952.  IDEA is proud of its past affiliation with FSDA.

Instructor training and certification was handled by FSDA Scuba Training Committee.  Many new instructors were from out of state or had moved out of the state.  The committee was spreading throughout the continental U.S.  By 1978, there were more FSDA instructors outside the state than there were within.  We had also spread to the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, the Antilles, and Barbados.  It was at this time the committee members decided that the FSDA Scuba Training Committee had outgrown FSDA.  A new name, a new logo, and a new direction was forthcoming.  A new "IDEA" was born.

SDI was created in 1999 and grew out of the success of our sister company TDI, which specializes in the more advanced disciplines of dive training.

Both students and instructors have embraced the no nonsense approach that the SDI training system offers. We have streamlined the course materials to let students study the essential academics with an emphasis on practical diving skills learned in both the pool and open water environments. SDI is the only agency to require students to be taught with modern dive computers from the onset of training.

SDI course materials are state-of-the-art; the materials are lavishly illustrated with photography and graphics.

Diving is constantly changing. SDI staff is always looking forward and striving to be the innovators in scuba diving education. SDI focus is to make the experience of diving one that is enjoyed by every family member.

SDI staff are all active divers; and want to share the love of the sport.
